The American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (AU EGLS) is aimed at enhancing educational equity and fostering diversity globally. AU EGL Scholarship 2025 Details
For the academic year of 2025, AU EGL scholarship covers all billable expenses at American University to include full tuition, room and board for two students from abroad that require a non-immigrant visa such as an F-1 or J-1 student visa to study in the United States. The scholarship does not cover non-billable expenses like mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes, and miscellaneous expenses which add up approximately $4k/year.
This award can be renewed for up to four years of undergraduate studies on condition that applicants maintain satisfactory academic performance. All majors offered at AU are open for applications by students.
New AU EGL Partial Scholarships
We are delighted to launch the new AU EGL partial scholarships! Besides two full scholarships there will be up to eight partial scholarships available each worth $40k per annum. These scholarships are named after African Studies Association in honor of talented candidates who successfully complete AU EGL scholarship application process. In order to qualify for these partially funded places you do not have to apply again. You must demonstrate extra money over and above the initial $4000 if recommended for a partial scholarship so as to pay for any other remaining expenses.
Eligibility
You can apply for this UA EGLS if:
- You’re neither a US citizen nor a dual US citizen plus another country permanent resident nor a U.S pending permanent resident.
- Post-secondary studies have not been taken by you or started at another university either in your home country or USA.
- You completed secondary school no earlier than 2023.

Common or Coalition Application with all required documents as specified on AO’s international instructions checklist:
- Bank Letter and AU Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF) showing a minimum of US $4,000. Upload these through the applicant portal or email them as PDF attachments to admissionsdocuments@american.edu.
- Official English Proficiency Test Scores (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, PTE Academic).
- Education USA Center Letter (if applicable).
Application Process
To become eligible for the AU EGL scholarship, you are required to go through application process in two steps:
- Submit the Common or Coalition Application along with all supporting documents by December 1, 2024.
- Submit the AU EGL Scholarship application and essays via your applicant portal by the December 1, 2024 deadline. Ensure you complete Step 1 before submitting the AU EGLS application. Late applications will not be considered.
Deadline
Note these important deadlines:
- December 1, 2024: Submit the Common or Coalition Application and AU EGL Scholarship application.
- April 1, 2025: Notification of scholarship results.
Preferences
The preference for AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship shall be given to:
- International students who have faced obstacles and come from varied, underrepresented global and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Those pupils whose average marks in grades 9-12 of high school were not less than 3.8 out of 4.0 (or in the top 10% of their class).
- Applicants should show a strong commitment as leaders, volunteers, community servers and those people that uplift the needs of their home countries.
- They must meet specific English proficiency requirements such as having above 95 TOEFL iBT, above 7.0 IELTS and above 33 SAT Reading sub score.
